Greek provider of telecommunication services Hellenic Telecommunication Organisation Ltd. (OTE) and Telekom of Austria AG are interested in buying Montenegrin Telekom.
The Council for privatisation stated that the Government of Montenegro accepted these two applications, that is, request for registration of companies interested in privatisation of the national telecommunication operator.
Greek company OTE is the main Greek provider that has 5.9 million fixed telephone lines and 1.5 million mobile subscribers in Greece. In the last three years this provider registered increase of the total income for 45% and last year OTE had income of 3.6 billion Euros. This provider of telecommunication services invests in the Balkans and Middle East, Rumania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Albania, Ukraine and Armenia. Shares of OTE are in the stock exchange in Athens and market value of this provider is 8.3 million Euros.
Telekom of Austria is the leading provider of telecommunication services in Austria with 3.3 million local fixed telephone lines and 2.8 million subscribers of mobile telephony. Last year, the Telekom of Austria had income of 3.9 billion Euros, and it also has successful international presence in Croatia, Slovenia, Liechtenstein and Czech Republic as well as with its strategic shareholder, Telecom Italia. Last year this company appeared on Austrian and New York stock exchange and its market price is 3.5 billion Euros.
Telekom of Montenegro has 185,000 users of fixed lines in the Republic and it is also a provider of GSM services through its network Monet, which has 125,000 subscribers. The income of Telekom last year was 76 million Euros, which is 48% more than in 1999.
