Knezevic: Jugobanka bankruptcy inevitable
Podgorica (MINA-BUSINESS) - Deputy central bank general manager Goran Knezevic said on Wednesday that shaving off external debts and bank#s liabilities for frozen private hard currency savings in the case of Jugobanka Podgorica would not have helped the bank to avoid bankruptcy, unlike Montenegrobanka where these measures worked. The central bank declared Jugobanka bankrupt on Monday due to massive debts and left around 190 workers without jobs. Bank workers had accused the monetary authorities of misleading them to believe that a foreign buyer would step in to recapitalise Jugobanka. "Potential investors interested to recapitalise Jugobanka had not been good enough, they had no audited financial statements nor plans for the bank#s future work so the central bank decided that they had not been reputable," Knezevic told a news conference. Speaking about Montenegrobanka, which had been under central bank#s administration for the past year, Knezevic said the bank would have its licence renewed. During the past year, it managed to collect 6.2 million euros in claims from debtors and expects another debt payment of 1.1 million euros by next Tuesday. In the past year, the bank#s property worth 2.7 million euros had been sold and 1.8 million euros worth of debts rescheduled. The bank expected to sign agreements on rescheduling a further 6.9 million euros worth of debts. It almost halved the number of workers and cut its costs by around 40 percent.
