Output fell in 2001
Podgorica (MINA-BUSINESS) - Industrial output in Montenegro fell 0.8 percent in 2001 compared to 2000, researchers of the Podgorica-based Institute for Strategic Studies and Forecasts (ISSP) said in the March issue of their magazine Monet. Industrial sector generated 42 percent of Montenegrin gross domestic product. A sharp 22 percent monthly decline in industrial output in January this year resulted from power cuts, a lack of cash for raw material purchases, outdated technology and the fact that January has the lowest number of working days. Manufacturing industries# output grew 1.6 percent and electrical power production fell 6.1 percent. ISSP researchers said that under an optimal scenario, Montenegrin output of aluminium this year could reach 100,000 tonnes, 400,000 tonnes of pig iron, 1.0 million tonnes of bauxite, 75,000 tonnes of sea salt and 2.7 million tonnes of coal. Fishing and shipping have been identified as two sectors most likely to drive the economy forward. Tourism was expected to generate revenue of some 117 million euros although the German DEG company said the sector could be generating up to 500 million euros a year.
