SDP: Everybody is a loser in Montenegrin privatisations
Podgorica (MINA-BUSINESS) - A delayed beginning of privatisations in Montenegro and a very slow pace of the process have disappointed many citizens and made all the participants in the privatisation process a loser, the Social-Democratic Party (SDP) of Montenegro said on Wednesday. "The main consequence of delayed privatisation was a loss of output, gross domestic product, income and jobs in leading factories," SDP member from Niksic Krsto Boskovic said. He said around 30,000 jobs disappeared while average wages fell from 1,200 German marks 12 years ago to around five marks and recovered to some 300 German marks. He said the biggest losers so far had been a cement plant, a brick works, a factory producing cellulose, a medicinal herb processor and the shipping fleet. Over the past eight years, state funds had benumbed some 2.0 billion German marks worth of capital, leaving the companies without necessary working capital. The mass voucher privatisation has been impeccable in technical terms, but it could not have compensated the damage inflicted by the delayed start of the privatisation. So far, the process has not resulted in a capital market and affordable credit policy. Boskovic said foreign investors had been very close to a decision to leave Montenegro.
