Trade union may launch general strike after the labour law is passed by parliament
Podgorica (MINA-BUSINESS) - The Alliance of Independent Trade Unions of Montenegro said on Wednesday it would launch a general strike if the Montenegrin parliament approved the draft labour law, secretary of the alliance Budimir Sljivancanin told a press conference. The trade unions say that a previous labour law, seen as acceptable to workers, has been changed under the pressure of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund and that the Labour Ministry amended the draft without consulting the workers. Workers said that the document significantly reduced workers# rights, cut redundancy payments and offered little protection to redundant workers. Trade unions plan to organise a two-day conference on July 12-13 and meet representatives of the World Bank, the IMF and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to find out if the proposal had been drafted by these institutions or by the government.
