IMF mission confirms Montenegro’s commitment to continuing reforms

IMF mission confirms Montenegro’s commitment to continuing reforms

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – Minister of Finance Novica Vukovic said that the mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was very useful, adding that it reaffirmed Montenegro’s commitment to pursuing reforms that contribute to long-term fiscal stability and steady progress toward EU membership.

He and his team held a concluding meeting with IMF representatives, marking the end of a one-week expert mission dedicated to analyzing existing fiscal rules and preparing recommendations for further improving Montenegro’s fiscal framework.

During the mission, IMF and Ministry of Finance representatives discussed best practices for implementing fiscal rules, the application of those rules to public finances, and opportunities for further aligning national legislation with the European Union’s reformed economic governance framework.

At the final meeting, the Ministry of Finance stated that the IMF presented its preliminary findings and recommendations, focusing on maintaining fiscal discipline, introducing additional tools for medium-term budget planning, and strengthening the institutional framework for overseeing public finances.

“IMF recommendations make a valuable contribution to strengthening our fiscal framework. It is particularly significant that the mission recognized that many of the provisions of the Draft Law on the Budget and Fiscal Responsibility are already aligned with the principles of the European Union’s reformed fiscal framework,” Vukovic said.

He stated that their goal remains clear: preserving stable public finances, managing the budget responsibly, and strengthening confidence in Montenegro’s economic policies among citizens, investors, and international partners.
