New projects pave the way for stable supply
Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – According to the energy ministers of Montenegro and Italy, Admir Sahmanovic and Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, energy connectivity and new infrastructure projects lay the foundation for a stable supply, the development of renewable energy sources, and closer economic ties between the two countries.
At a meeting on the sidelines of the Gastech 2025 conference in Milan, the world’s largest event dedicated to gas development and the energy transition, they highlighted the strategic importance of the second submarine cable, which will further solidify Montenegro’s role as a regional energy hub.
“Montenegro’s transmission network could be ready to accommodate the cable by the end of this year, opening the door for accelerated implementation of new renewable energy projects,” a press release reads.
The first submarine cable connection with Italy brought Montenegro not only a position as a regional leader but also significant revenues.
Last year alone, the Montenegrin Electricity Transmission System (CGES) earned €42 million from leasing cross-border capacity. Therefore, continuing cooperation and timely launch of the second cable’s construction process is of key importance, not only for Montenegro and Italy but for the entire region.
During the meeting, the text of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Montenegro and Italy in the field of energy was agreed upon. The MoU aims to provide institutional support for electricity market interconnection projects, promote the integration of Montenegro’s market into the European system, and facilitate knowledge exchange and effective cooperation between Italian and Montenegrin entities involved in energy integration projects.
“Its signing, which is expected soon, will mark a new milestone for joint projects, especially in the field renewable energy and transmission infrastructure, strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries,” the press release notes.
The two ministers agreed that there is potential for closer cooperation in the energy sector, with Italy expressing the need for additional capacity.
According to the press release, Montenegro and Italy continue to build a partnership that brings security, new investments, and development opportunities, not only for the two countries but for the entire region.
