Pejovic Erakovic: Commitment to UNESCO values not demonstrated by chairing the Commission

Podgorica, (MINA) – True commitment to UNESCO values is not demonstrated by chairing the National Commission, but by the willingness to make a decision and send a clear message that there is no place in the Government for ministers who view natural and cultural heritage as a burden, as stated from the President Jakov Milatovic’s office.

Prime Minister Milojko Spajic announced on Thursday that he has assumed the chairmanship of the UNESCO National Commission and said that, together with experts, he will do everything to preserve Montenegro’s special values and its international recognition.

President of Montenegro’s adviser for culture, Milena Pejovic Erakovic, said that since 1979, when the natural and cultural-historical area of Kotor was inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site, Montenegro has changed regimes, political systems, social priorities and economic conditions.

“However, no one ever thought to question its UNESCO status. This happened for the first time, publicly and without hesitation, by a minister of the current government”, said Pejovic Erakovic in a press release.

She remarked that genuine commitment to the UNESCO values is not demonstrated by chairing the National Commission.

“But with the willingness to make a decision and send a clear message that there is no place in the Government of the first future EU member state for ministers who view its natural and cultural heritage as a burden, instead of promoting and protecting the exceptional universal value and public interest of all citizens of Montenegro”, said Pejovic Erakovic.
