Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro is an example of the Western Balkans’ successful European future and proof that EU enlargement is an achievable policy, said President Jakov Milatovic, following a meeting with President of the European Council Antonio Costa in Tivat.
According to the press release from the President’s office, Milatovic met with Costa ahead of the EU-Western Balkans Summit, hosted by Montenegro.
Milatovic said that hosting the Summit in Tivat is a strong confirmation of Montenegro’s international credibility, as well as the result of intensive diplomatic efforts conducted in close cooperation with the President of the European Council and European partners.
The two officials reaffirmed Montenegro’s determination to become the 28th member of the EU by 2028, noting that this goal requires continued commitment to reforms, strengthening the rule of law, functional institutions, electoral reform, the fight against corruption and the efficient use of European funds.
Costa and Milatovic also discussed the Western Balkans Growth Plan, regional connectivity, the common market, energy security and the region’s resilience in the face of major geopolitical challenges.
Milatovic pointed out that Montenegro wants to be a success story of the European enlargement policy and a reliable partner in promoting regional stability.
“Montenegro’s success will be good news for the entire Western Balkans. When Montenegro joins the EU, it will demonstrate that the European path delivers results, that reforms pay off and that the region has its place in the European family”, said Milatovic.
