Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro is fully committed to closing all negotiation chapters during the Irish presidency of the Council of the EU, said Minister of European Affairs (MEP), Maida Gorcevic.
According to the press release, she discussed Montenegro’s plans for the final phase of the EU accession process with the Minister of European Affairs and Defense of Ireland, Thomas Byrne, and briefed him about the most recent progress in the negotiation process.
Gorcevic pointed out that this is the main strategic and reform goal of Montenegro and expressed belief that, with the partner support of member states like Ireland, the citizens’ expectations can be met.
The MEA stated that the meeting focused on Ireland’s presidency over the EU Council in a period Montenegro sees as crucial for closing most of negotiation chapters and finalizing the technical part of the process.
Byrne welcomed Montenegro’s efforts so far and said that Ireland, as a traditionally strong supporter of the EU enlargement policy, remains a firm partner of the Western Balkans, and especially Montenegro, on the EU path.
He assessed that the upcoming period of a year and a half will be extremely challenging, but also of crucial importance for meeting Montenegro’s strategic goal – full membership in the EU.
