Podgorica, (MINA) - The prosecutorial independence will remain an unassailable standard, regardless of public or political pressures on this institution, said Supreme State Prosecutor Milorad Markovic.
Responding to, what he described as growing political pressures and ongoing public debates on the position and role of the prosecution, Markovic recalled that the independence and autonomy of the prosecution are the foundation of its work and that these principles cannot be subject of improvisation or political projections.
“The VDT strongly condemns the unfounded accusations and personal disqualifications made through press releases, which amount to direct pressure on the prosecution and a political attack on its constitutionally guaranteed autonomy and independence”, Markovic said in a press release.
He further added that such attitude towards an institution that has the competence defined by the Constitution to act independently, is inadmissible in a modern democratic society, and undermines the foundations of the rule of law and erodes public trust in the state prosecutor’s organization.
