Milatovic signals he may form a party

Podgorica, (MINA) - President of Montenegro Jakov Milatovic has signaled that he may form a political party, stating that the country needs a new force “that will bring together honest and credible people who want to work, not make promises or offer excuses”.

In an interview with the Vijesti daily, Milatovic said that he has been advocating the idea of a strong political center for years and that he remains a partner to all those who sincerely foster the values of a European, democratic, civic and reformed Montenegro, free of social divisions and instability.

Speaking about his relationship with Prime Minister Milojko Spajic, with whom he had co-founded the Europe Now Movement (PES) in 2022, and left in 2024, Milatovic said that their institutional communication takes place through official channels, while they also have direct contacts “when situation requires”.

He announced another important conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron in near future, following their recent phone call after that country almost blocked the closure of two of Montenegro’s EU negotiation chapters in mid-December, but also “with another European leader in order to help accelerate Montenegro’s EU accession process.”

Milatovic argues that the issue of introducing the Serbian language as an official language in Montenegro’s Constitution is legitimate, but “it is raised periodically by certain political actors to cover up their lack of visible results”.

Speaking about the new tensions within the Army of Montenegro and the Defense and Security Council, Milatovic said that his insistence on respecting the Constitution and the law in all aspects of the Army’s functioning is “key to preserving its integrity and reputation”.
