Milovic: Populism and borrowed standards come at a high cost

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – According to Member of Parliament Nikola Milovic of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), populism and borrowed standards come at a high cost, and the bill is yet to come.

“Instead of driving productivity and wage growth, the economic experiment we are experiencing relies on debt, creating a spiral of indebtedness for households, businesses, and the state,” Milovic posted on his X account.

He added that this captures the essence of a populist-consumer model, which favours short-term consumption today while creating long-term problems for the future.

Milovic noted that household bank debt has reached a historic high, totalling €2.2 billion in the first half of this year.

“No reasonable person rejoices in taking out a loan. Credit is not a gain, it is a deferred bill with interest. The key question is: what happens when credit capacity is exhausted? Will banks be able to grant new loans to citizens and businesses who are already over-indebted?” he asked.

He also pointed out that nearly half of citizens cannot cover basic expenses, while a third are living worse than they did last year.

“This clearly shows that a ‘better life’ is being built on debt, rather than real progress. Long-term dependency, insecurity, and an imminent crisis are our reality,” Milovic concluded.
