Preparations for ESCB integration underway

Preparations for ESCB integration underway

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – The Central Bank (CBCG) is actively preparing for Montenegro’s accession to the EU, as well as for the future integration of the CBCG into the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and, at a later stage, into the Eurosystem.

“As part of this process, the CBCG needs to ensure that its organisation and operations are aligned with the ESCB and the Eurosystem standards and requirements,” the CBCG stated in a press release.

On this occasion, a meeting of the Steering Committee for the “CBCG Needs Assessment for Alignment with ESCB and Eurosystem Standards” project was held at the CBCG.

“Alignment with these standards is a key prerequisite for strengthening the credibility and efficiency of the CBCG and for Montenegro’s overall progress in the European integration process,” the press release reads.

The project is implemented in cooperation with partner institutions – the De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) and the National Bank of Belgium (NBB), as well as the German Central Bank (Bundesbank), which leads the Western Balkans (WB6) Programme aimed at strengthening the capacities of central banks in the region and their integration into the ESCB.

“The project, launched in September 2025 and running until June 2026, aims to comprehensively assess the current situation, identify areas for improvement, and define clear reform priorities in line with European central banking standards,” the CBCG stated.
