Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – The Socialist People’s Party (SNP) will not support the abolition of work-free Sundays, as it is an important workers’ right and a standard introduced to protect employees, particularly in sectors that have long endured excessive workloads.
Vuk Stanisic, President of the Youth Association of the SNP Podgorica Municipal Committee, stated that the Labour Law clearly guarantees Sunday rest as one of the fundamental rights in modern European societies, and its abolition would constitute a direct blow to workers, especially in trade and service sectors.
“While the debate about extending the working week is reopening in Montenegro, global trends are moving in the opposite direction. Numerous countries and companies are shifting to more flexible models and shorter working hours, such as the four-day workweek pilot project in the United Kingdom, where the vast majority of participants continued with this model due to increased productivity and employee satisfaction,” Stanisic stated in a press release.
He added that similar examples from Belgium, Iceland, and the Scandinavian countries confirm that shorter working hours reduce stress, improve quality of life, and do not negatively affect work outcomes.
The SNP noted that it is the Government’s duty to protect workers, not to yield to interest groups seeking a longer workweek and greater pressure on employees.
“Instead of abolishing work-free Sundays, it is necessary to strengthen inspection oversight, improve working conditions, and ensure strict compliance with the law. For the SNP, there is no dilemma: work-free Sundays remain, because workers deserve protection, stability, and respect,” Stanisic concluded.
