Strengthening cooperation in processing war crimes

Strengthening cooperation in processing war crimes

Podgorica, (MINA) - Supreme State Prosecutor Milorad Markovic and Chief State Prosecutor of Croatia Ivan Turudic signed in Zagreb the annex to the Agreement on Cooperation and Prosecution of War Crimes, Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide, originally concluded by the state authorities of the two countries in 2006.

The Montenegrin Supreme State Prosecutor’s Office (VDT) announced that the annex introduces the principle of reciprocity in the application of the Agreement, which further improves legal cooperation between the state prosecutor’s offices of Montenegro and Croatia in prosecuting those crimes.

“The application of reciprocity means that the provisions of the Agreement will be applied to all cases of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed on the territory of Montenegro or Croatia, or against their citizens, when the perpetrators have residence and/or citizenship of one of the signatory states”, the press release said.

The VDT stated that in this way equal conditions and obligations are created for both parties in conducting investigations and criminal proceedings, contributing to more efficient prosecution of perpetrators and strengthening trust in regional judicial cooperation.
