Milatovic’s office: Competent authorities to act swiftly on threats directed at the President

Podgorica, (MINA) – President Jakov Milatovic, by returning the Law on Real Estate Tax to the Parliament for reconsideration, chose to protect the Constitution and the state, the President’s office stated and urged the competent authorities to promptly react to the threats directed at Milatovic.

The president’s office pointed out that the parliamentary majority, Prime Minister Milojko Spajic and the Government adopted the Law on Real Estate Tax despite knowing that it was unconstitutional, that it undermines the unified tax system, involves retroactive provisions prohibited by the Constitution and enabled the selective application of rights.

“At the moment when the President decided to return the Law to the Parliament, it was clear that it violates the Constitution, but it was not yet obvious that it was drafted to protect personal interests of a politician” Milatovic’s office said.

That motive, as they pointed out, became visible only after the threats to the President ensued, which exposed everything that had been hidden until then.

According to the President’s office, after the media reported about the threats, none of those responsible reacted.

“Instead of an institutional reaction, a political campaign has been launched in which the threats are being downplayed”, the press release states.

Milatovic’s cabinet emphasized that in a democratic and legal state it is unthinkable for institutions to remain silent in the face of threats that were publicly uttered to the highest state official as a reaction to his constitutional duties.

They concluded by calling for an urgent dismissal of Gjelosaj’s by the Government.
