Decision to grant protection to Smailova dubbed positive example of human rights protection

Podgorica, (MINA) – Granting international protection to women’s rights activist Dinara Smailova and her husband Almat Mukhameyanov is a good example of the application of international standards and the real protection of the human rights of activists, announced the Human Rights Action (HRA) and the Center for Women’s Rights (CZP).

The two NGOs welcomed the decision of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to grant Smailova and Mukhameyanov the status of persons under international protection.

As stated by the HRA and CZP, after almost two years of lengthy and complex proceedings, the authorities finally, within the deadline for decision, recognized the threat to safety of the activist who has spoken publicly about sexual violence and fought for women’s rights in Kazakhstan for years.

“Providing shelter to Dinara and her husband is a good example of the application of international standards and the real protection of the human rights of human rights activists”, the press release reads.

The HRA and CZP said that they expect Montenegro not to give up this practice and serve as an example for others.
