Scepanovic: Security situation in Montenegro becoming increasingly complex

Podgorica, (MINA) – The security situation in Montenegro is becoming more complex, said acting Chief of the Police Administration Lazar Scepanovic, adding that murder of Ivan Milacic that took place on Saturday in Podgorica has not yet been solved.

Scepanovic told the press conference that the police acted in a timely manner after the shooting at the Taormina bar in Podgorica that took place before midnight on Saturday night, in which Milacic was killed.

“Taking into account the brazenness of the act, it’s fortunate that we don’t have accidental victims”, Scepanovic said, Vijesti portal reports.

He said that he could not share more details, but reminded that the victim was arrested in 2020 on suspicion of forming a criminal organization.

“This person was acquitted during the subsequent trial, and convicted of another criminal offense, but did not fully serve his sentence”, Scepanovic recalled.

He said that two serious crimes committed in a short period of time will not prevent the police from confronting modern security threats and dismantling the most dangerous criminal networks.

Speaking about the murder of Igor Nedovic, Scepanovic said that immediately and without delay after the shooting, all capacities were made available and in a relatively short period of time material evidence was collected that unequivocally point to strong suspicion that Arjan Reckovic shot at Nedovic.

“This person also used a firearm on May 17 in the City Kvart neighborhood and seriously injured I.N, after which police officers identified the perpetrator and his co-perpetrator, who are hiding and have strong logistical, financial and technical support. We are making enormous efforts to locate him”, Scepanovic added.

Scepanovic said that there are 11 active criminal groups and that the two largest groups have more than 300 members.

“I stand in front the Montenegrin public even when the security situation is complicated. I hope that we will shed light on this crime as well”, Scepanovic said.

He said that the Police Administration cannot take absolute responsibility for the state of security in the country.

“I have to emphasize the shortcomings of our penal policy and the judiciary’s failure to pass judgments within the legally prescribed time”, said Scepanovic, expressing hope that the National Security Agency and the police, through institutional and international cooperation, will give an adequate response, because this is a security risk for the citizens of Montenegro.
