Podgorica, (MINA) – The implementation of electoral reform, supported by 68 MPs of the Montenegrin parliament, represents a historic success, said Prime Minister Milojko Spajic, during the Prime Minister’s Questions in the Parliament.
Head of the Democratic Party of Socialists parliamentary group Andrija Nikolic asked Spajic why he and the Europe Now Movement (PES) remain silent in the face of, what he described as increasingly aggressive historical revisionism and glorification of the Quisling Chetnik movement by the government’s coalition partners.
Spajic said that the Montenegrin Parliament adopted a major reform on Friday.
“Sixty-eight MPs supported the electoral reform, which is an incredible number. It means 84 percent of the parliament was in favor of a major electoral reform. This is a historic success”, said Spajic.
He assessed that this is a continuation of the positive trend that they started with the agreement on the population census, when, as he said, they came out of the entrenched political divisions.
Spajic said that this is why Montenegro is moving fast towards the EU, claiming that the country will close all negotiation chapters by the end of next year.
He said that he also understands the criticism that these successes created.
“Whenever historic changes happen, our colleagues, especially from the opposition, feel the need to “vent”, said Spajic.
He said that he came to the Parliament to listen to MPs’ statements, adding that he would not respond any questions, but listen from the bench to everything they have to say.
In response, Nikolic said that none of the achievements Spajic mentioned – the population census, the IBAR and electoral reform – would have been possible if there had not been a state-responsible opposition.
He accused Spajic of not respecting his constitutional duties for the past four months.
“Today, greater-state nationalism and outright fascism have found their foothold in laws, media and other actions endorsed by you and your political movement. Today you are proposing laws that are anti-constitutional, anti-European. Why? To protect your power monopolies”, said Nikolic.
He concluded that the citizens deserve to know whether Spajic supports or condemns the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister at the memorial service for Draza Mihailovic, whom he described as a Quisling collaborator and Hitler’s associate.
